[He was already well aware she might be angry with him for disappearing so readily and leaving the fortress unguarded, but--he didn't technically tell her about the soldiers watching from afar.]

I've got somethin' to do for the next week for a friend from the south. I won't be able to talk until I'm done.

[Merida's not the best morning person, but where someone might've asked 'a week? what takes a week?', she doesn't say anything about that.

Well, not quite. Though, I literally will not be able to talk for a great portion of that week.

[Yeah, that wasn't ominous.]

No worries about it, though. I'm sure it'll be a bit of fun for me.

[If it was anyone else, she would've been more worried about that. Not being able to talk for a portion of the week. She sighs a bit.]

Guess I'll have to find some other way to keep my bed warm. [There's a pout and a bit of teasing to her voice.] Just don't go gettin' yourself into trouble.

[There was a depressing thought. Lancer didn't suspect at all that Merida's tease was all the more serious than he thought--not that she knew, either.]

You'll have to do with the hearth until I get back. When I get back, I'll keep you plenty warm to make up for it.

[The hearth was warm but some of it didn't reach her bed. Even if she had been kind of half heartedly teasing him, that was a good reassurance. Besides which, she could just say she as holding him to coming back later if it wasn't like that.]

Then...I'll see you in a week?

You will. [Though Merida was cautious with him, he still enjoyed company in bed. Despite not having to sleep, there were some very comforting things about not being alone at night.]
