[Her lips curve a little, still feeling humbled that the Black Shuck asked him to keep watch over her even four months on. The look on her face says that she appreciates it, however much he believes she can take care of herself.]
How have you been? You look just as exhausted as I feel.
[yes he does; he will take whatever risk he has to in order to help others-- especially the people that he knows.]
Fine. [a knee-jerk reaction to how are you's, ben doesn't see the point in delving into his injuries.] Wish I'd known more about that creature before it got to us.
[She purses her lips at that, but she doesn't ask. Everyone is comfortable with giving varying levels of information on their well being, and she's no different. Merida sighs a little at that.]
Th' information we got was for...Unseelie only. If any of us had been caught spreading it to Seelie, I'm sure we'd be gettin' more than an earfull from Morla.
[The tone of her voice says that she's sick of this bullshit.]
[ben's mood shifts, eyes narrowing. he knows he shouldn't be angry at merida for this, knows that morla is the ruler and would most likely punish any unseelie that spread information, he can't help but feel like justice means nothing here.]
People were dyin' just for being near the damned thing. Morla ain't got nothin' to do with helpin' people survive. All the Monarchs care about is fightin' just to win. It don't matter who lives or dies long as they get what they want.
[His reaction makes her tense, blue eyes near electric with her own anger. She's been holding it in for days now, keeping it down. Merida grits her teeth, nearly snapping with her tone of voice that comes through, thick with her accent.]
For th' sake of th' gods, Ben, I have two native kids under my protection because of th' Jabberwock an' th' monarchs. I followed it's trail back up North to look for survivors an' found near none; th' ones I did find I helped get to safety an' healers. [She clears her throat, suddenly finding it hoarse before she drags a hand down her face.] I know, Ben. I know th' monarchs don't give a damn about helpin' any of th' small folk or even those of us that get caught up in this an' want nothin' to do with it.
[the mention of kids has his anger wavering; he wants to speak to the monarchs about how unacceptable the casualties had been, how many people were left dead or dying. it's unacceptable]. no one asked for this, and certainly no one deserved it.]
Aye, boy an' girl. They're safe. I'd never drag kids into danger.
[Her own tone deflates a little and she says a bit more against the wall that she's chosen, dropping to the ground. Merida pressed a hand to her face, then drew her knees up and wrapped her arms around them. Her voice comes out hoarse in her next words, blinking and scrubbing the heel of her hand across her face.]
It was just a kid, Ben. Just a child. I want to be angry at it but I can't.
[he exhales, trying to make the stress leave, but it's only half-working. his head is pounding and he needs sustenance, but he can't bring himself to drink, let alone eat. he's relieved that the kids are alright, knows that merida wouldn't consciously bring them into any danger, but it still has him worrying. he'd offer his help with them, if he had the time and patience.]
[She wouldn't want to make him come all the way down to the fortress since she was going to take them to their uncle in a day or so. They'd be safe there, happier. Merida threads her fingers through her hair, closing her eyes.]
I could understand th' Jabberwock. I think all th' Unseelie could. [She drapes her arms over her knees, clearing her throat.] It sounded like a child, not much younger than my brothers or those kids. It...she didn't know what she was doin'.
[it still wreaked havoc, caused a vast amount of damage, and even killed people. he could sympathize, honestly, knew that even if the unseelie tried to talk her down, calming a child is a task within itself, especially if it's not human. no one could even get near the damn thing, let alone relocate her.]
[They tried. Even if Merida had wanted her dead to start with, the Jabberwock never stood a chance at returning to Caer Scima with the castle torn down like it had been. Merida raised a hand to rub the bridge of her nose, squeezing her eyes shut to try and get the dying shrieks to stop ringing in her ears.]

What do you mean it was just a kid?
[and what makes that okay?]

Gods, Mor'du was easier to deal with than this.
